Why Is Packaging Shape Important in Shrink Sleeve Design?

Shrink Sleeve is a labeling solution based on the principle of applying a printed film that shrinks with heat and conforms to the shape of the packaging.

This structure can be particularly suitable for projects where the standard labeling area is limited or where a larger portion of the packaging is intended to be used for communication and branding purposes.

However, Shrink Sleeve design is not simply about placing graphics around the package.

Flat Design, Three-Dimensional Packaging

The design is created on a flat surface on a computer screen. During application, the film shrinks with heat and adapts to the curves, diameter changes, and overall shape of the packaging.

During this transformation, some areas of the design may be affected more than others. For this reason, the positioning of logos, text, barcodes, and regulatory information should be determined according to the geometry of the packaging.

Four Critical Areas to Consider

In a Shrink Sleeve project, the following factors should be evaluated together:

  1. Packaging geometry
  2. Design distortion allowances
  3. Film seam area
  4. Application tunnel conditions

If changes in diameter and package curves are not assessed correctly, the proportions of the design may appear different on the physical product than originally intended.

Technical Preparation Is Part of the Design

In Shrink Sleeve projects, it is important to work with an actual packaging sample or a technical drawing. The design should be evaluated not only as a flat artwork file, but also on the physical form of the packaging.

The right result is achieved when the design, film, packaging, and application conditions are planned together.
